Sestriere - Vialattea - Susa Valley
Built in the 1930’s by the famous Agnelli family, Sestriere was Europe's first, purpose built ski resort. With its high altitude base in the heart of the Vialattea ski area, it is a perfect place for fresh powder days and many hours of good skiing fun for the whole family. The resort proudly sits high and mighty at 2,035m, in the midst of mountains – the highest peak being Mont Motta, at 2,800m. The immediate area of the Sestriere commune is home to a number of smaller hamlets, Sestriere Colle, Sestriere Borgata, Champlas du Col and Champlas Janvier.
Sestriere stands in the company of giants - Mont Banchette, Mont Fraiteve, Mont Sises, Punta Rognosa di Sestriere and Mont Motta. The scenery and natural surroundings are enhanced by Val Troncea Natural Park, close by, which is home to the abundant life of ample Alpine flora and fauna.
Sestriere is probably the best know resort in the Vialattea – it is no hidden gem, but a gem it is. It may be a commercialised commune but it has everything you need in one area, and if you want a ski holiday front and centre in the Milky Way - where you can ski for days – this is the place to come to. The area is not short of a slope and hosts many a competition, as well as having its own Olympic level piste, named after one of the ski resort developers, Giovanni Nasi, known fully as ‘La pista Kandahar Banchetta Giovanni Nasi’. Sestriere was one of the main hosts of the 2006 Winter Olympics. Here also, on the slopes of Sestriere, you have the thrill of skiing at night under floodlights.
