Montgenèvre to Sauze d’Oulx
The quaint yet legendary ski resort of Montgenèvre is a worthy contender when looking into Haute-Alpes ski holiday destinations.
If you want to try your hand - or feet rather – at skiing from Montgenèvre to Sauze d’Oulx, it is possible. Start in France and end up in Italy – all in a day’s ski!
Both Montgenèvre and Sauze d’Oulx resorts form part of the Milky Way ski area, a vast ski terrain, 400km in size. This collection of ski resorts in Piedmont also includes Claviere, Cesana Torinese, Sansicario, Sestriere, and Pragelato. Montgenèvre, known as the ‘French Connection’ is the only resort on the French side joined to ‘Vialattea’. Sauze d’Oulx is at the other end of this extensive skiing domain, on the Italian side.
Different by design and by nature, Montgenèvre is definitely more relaxed, ideal for families and for mixed-ability skiing, snow-sure and sunny. Situated at 1,860m, it is a real gem, sitting pretty with an authentic mountain village feel and recognised as the oldest ski resort in the French Alps.
Sauze d’Oulx is a larger resort with great intermediate slopes and masses of freeriding possibilities, attracting families, but also popular amongst those interested in a more social scene. The whole resort is well suited to those who enjoy their après ski.
You will need a Via Lattea area pass to ski the Milky Way which you can obtain through our partners Go Montgenèvre or Snow Holiday.
In order to experience the thrills and spills of the runs of the Milky Way where you can ‘sciare senza confini’ – we recommend you do the trip one-way. There is a marked route detailing slopes and lifts - as you head off, ‘cross-country’ in the direction of Claviere.
Let Snow Cab whisk you back to your accommodation in Montgenèvre by private transfer, in one of our 8-seater people-carriers. Not only will it be a welcomed ending to your day but it allows you to not worry about missing connecting lifts on the way back and lets you enjoy the entire day in the Vialattea, and perhaps, sample a little of that famous Apres-ski that Sauze is so well known for!!
You can alternatively be dropped off by Snow Cab on the Italian side and tour the Via Lattea the other way around - from Sauze d'Oulx via the Monte Fraiteve in the direction of Cesana then on to Clavière and over to Montgenèvre.
Either quest will take time, so head off early to make the most of your day. Be prepared to take easy strides as the journey will take time - getting around from slope to slope on the various lift systems, as well as the work you will need to put in on the flat terrain at times. Be sure to pausa pranzo on the Italian side.
Snow Cabs provide ski transfers to and from the Alps. Whether you are looking for a transfer from an airport, train station or city location, we specialise in many routes, including Montgenèvre and Sauze d’Oulx. Transfer time from Turin Airport to Montgenèvre is only 1 hour and 15 minutes.
